As a good, even outstanding writer, could one come to terms with the National Socialist regime? What prevented authors like Erich Kästner or Hans Fallada from emigrating after Hitler came to power? What attitude did they develop towards National Socialism in their writing, thinking and feeling? How does their behaviour contrast and conflict with well-known exile authors such as Klaus and Thomas Mann? How is it possible that established intellectuals did not immediately distance themselves, but perhaps even sympathized with the regime, followed the reputation and aesthetics of “German art” or simply looked away?
