Studying Abroad

Studying abroad is a great experience for students of all departments, but it is especially advisable for students in the field of literature and languages to experience some time abroad.

You could work abroad (e.g. as a language assistant), or intern or join a trainee program. Alternatively, you could study abroad for one or two semesters. The possibilities are manifold and perhaps overwhelming. It is well worth taking the time to browse the Internet (you can find some suggestions to get started at the end of this page), to inform yourself at the International Office, or to visit the ERASMUS+-departmental coordinators during their office hours.

ERASMUS+

The "Institut für Germanistische und Allgemeine Literaturwissenschaft" has ERASMUS+ partnerships with several European institutes. Students from those universities can study one or two semesters in Aachen, and students from Aachen can spend one or two semesters at those universities.

Ahead of the stay (in ERASMUS+ terms: „before the mobility“) both institutions will sign a so-called Learning Agreement for each student to make sure that the ECTS you acquire abroad will be credited at your home university after you get back.

As an ERASMUS+ student you will receive ‘ideal funding’, which may consist of language classes at the guest institution, a welcome program, special housing offers, mentoring possibilities or something of this kind. You will also receive a stipend to cover increases in living expenses. The amount of the stipend depends on the country of the receiving institution and varies from year to year (ca. 150-250€ / month). You can get more detailed and more up-to-date information at the International Office of your home university.

Please keep in mind that places for German classes at the RWTH Aachen University Language Center (“Sprachenzentrum”) are limited and fill up quickly. Please register as soon as you are matriculated.

Information for Incoming Students

The aforementioned departmental coordinator is looking forward to advising you and to approving of your Learning Agreements. Please schedule office hours in time.

Freemover-Incoming Students, who wish to take classes with the faculty of the "Institut für Germanistische und Allgemeine Literaturwissenschaft", should confer with Dr. Yashar Mohagheghi.

Application Materials Outgoings

  1. Cover letter outlining your motivation (1 to 2 pages)
  2. Curriculum Vitae
  3. Proof of language proficiency: Please ask the departmental coordinators which language skills are mandatory to apply to your preferred guest institution. Usually you will be required to show proof of a language proficiency of at least B1 in English or in the main language of instruction. Should you not meet these requirements by the time of your application, you can still apply, but you should show a realistic and concrete plan for reaching this level before your arrival abroad.

Information for Outgoing Students

Please note that you can also apply for ERASMUS+-places that other institutes of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities offer. Information about the partnerships of other institutes can be found on the homepage of the International Office. Please ask the appropriate departmental coordinator about which criteria apply to applications for their ERASMUS+ spots.

Applications (Outgoing)

In general we suggest going abroad in the second year of your B.A. However, a stay in the first semester of your third year is possible as well. You can also apply for funding for a stay abroad with ERASMUS+ during your M.A. Please note that not every partner institution can host M.A. students. Just ask the appropriate coordinator.

In your own interest you should discuss all application matters with the appropriate departmental coordinator in time.

The deadline for applications for the following winter semester will be at the beginning of the year, the deadline for the summer semester of the following year will be in spring. The exact deadlines can be found on the homepage of the International Office.
